The 11th European Conference on Tetraspanins

The 11th European Conference on Tetraspanins will explore the structure and the diverse roles of tetraspanin proteins in biological processes. These proteins, totaling 33 in humans (Tspan1-33), are defined by four transmembrane domains and distinct structural features. Genetic studies in mice and pathological mutations in humans have highlighted the crucial functions of specific tetraspanins in physiological processes, including immunity, brain and kidney function, vision, muscle regeneration, and reproduction. Many tetraspanins are also involved in cancer progression and facilitate infection by various pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Moreover, three tetraspanins—CD9, CD81, and CD63—are routinely used as markers to identify and purify extracellular vesicles secreted by most cell types. At the cellular level, tetraspanins play a critical role in regulating the trafficking and function of associated proteins and contribute to various membrane remodeling processes. Given their broad functions, tetraspanins are considered promising therapeutic targets in various diseases.
